CHD 20K

This one designed by a very special young man - Oliver as his entry into our Design A Medal Competition, earlier in 2019.  And it is very clear to see why Oliver was a winner with this fantastic, spinning design.

Oliver was born in Liverpool in 2010 and was transferred to Alder Hey which was his home for the first 3 months of his life.

The reason for this was he was born with a rare congenital heart condition called Hypoplastic right ventricle (HRHS), which means his right side didn’t develop as it should so he was born with half a heart.

At 3 days old he underwent his first open heart surgery, his second at 18 months and his 3rd at 4 years old.

He’s had his many ups and downs but now at 9 years old still under Alder Hey they are happy with him, he’s so full off energy, loves his family, friends, life, school, football (Liverpool fc) and his virtual challenges.

Oliver says “I’m not mended just re-plumbed to make my heart work like it should with help from my tablets”.

Oliver’s first medal was the 5k elf dash in 2018 and he’s been doing them ever since he does tire easily due to his condition but virtual challenges are great as you can do them at you own pace and split them, he’s determined to keep fit.

Oliver says the reason he designed this medal was “to make more awareness of chd in children, for people to know more about chd - not many people know about my rare condition.

My mum didn’t know much about chd until me. I want this to help others with chd”.

“To do a 20k is really hard for me because 1 - I can’t walk that far. 2- I get tired easily. 3 - I will have to split it. I want to keep fit and want others to keep fit too. I’m determined to do my 1st 20k!”
